Although ICSD have not provided any security advice as far as I'm aware, some users have enquired about it recently. A bit of research has led me to recommend the following:

    PC: Truecrypt http://www.truecrypt.org/
This is an open-source application that can provide encryption to part or all of a volume. It works with both FAT and NTFS file systems, on local, remote or external drives.

    Mac: Encrypted Disk Images http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578
This is already part of the OS, and easy to implement.

Both solutions would be pretty easy to provide; the largest issue is probably user awareness (of the problem and their/our responsibilities)
