HTA grant for treatment resistant depression

Willem Kuyken, as co-PI with John Campbell (Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, PCMD), Nicola Wiles (Bristol) and Chris Williams & Gillian Morrison (Glasgow), has been awarded a grant of £1.2 million by the NHS Health Technology Assessment Programme (HTA) in order to carry out a randomised control trial (RCT) to assess the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy for treatment resistant depression (TRD) in primary care. The Exeter value of the award is £462,000, shared equally between the School of Psychology and PCMD. The grant is for 45 months from 1st March 2008.

ESRC neuroscience grant

Francesco Guala (Sociology) and Tim Hodgson have been awarded a grant of £79,993.13 by the ESRC for research on the topic of "The neuroscience of conventions and norms". The grant is for 18 months from 1st September 2007, and includes a sum for fMRI use.

BA grant on progressive limb apraxia

Chris Code has been awarded a grant of £7,180 from the British Academy on the topic of "Progressive limb apraxia". The grant will run from 1st May to 31st October, 2007.

ESRC grant on face processing

Jeremy Tree has been awarded a grant of £80,131 from the ESRC on the topic of "Testing for dissociations between static and dynamic face matching and recognition in normal and abnormal face processing". The grant is for 15 months from 1st September 2007 and will employ a Research Fellow.

ESRC grant on modelling eye movements during reading

Don Mitchell and Tim Hodgson have been awarded a grant of £76,545 from the ESRC on the topic of "Modelling eye movements made in the course of reading syntactically ambiguous sentences". The grant is for one year from 1st January 2007 and will employ Xingjia (Rachel) Shen as a Research Fellow.

ESRC grant on person-specific knowledge

Cath Haslam, Tim Hodgson and Janice Kay have been awarded a grant of £79,838 from the ESRC on the topic of "The representation of emotional and personal significance in person-specific knowledge". The grant is for one year with a probable start date of 1st February 2007.

Alex Haslam appointed Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research

Alex Haslam has been appointed as a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research (CIAR) as part of its Social Interactions, Identity and Well-Being (SIIWB) Program headed by Professors John Helliwell and George Akerlof (2001 Nobel laureate in economics).

ESRC grant on When beliefs become realities

Thomas Morton, Tom Postmes and John Dupre (egenis) have been awarded a grant of £136,711 from the ESRC for research on the topic of "When beliefs become realities: Motives and strategies for essentialising intergroup differences". The grant is for two years from 1st December 2006 and will primarily be used to buy-out Thomas and Tom's time.

Wellcome grant on reducing vulnerability to depression

Ed Watkins has been awarded a grant of £221,349 from the Wellcome Trust for research entitled "Reducing vulnerability to depression: dysregulation of processing style and depressive rumination". The grant is for three years from 1st September 2006 and will employ a post-doc (Nick Moberly) and a temporary lecturer for two years. Further details of the grant are given below.

H.M. Court Service grant on Debtor Behaviour

Stephen Lea and Avril Mewse have been awarded an additional £91,108 by the Department of Constitutional Affairs (H.M. Courts Service) for Phase 2 of their research on Debtor Behaviour. Phase 1 of the research was for six months from 1st February 2006 and Phase 2 is for a further nine months from 1st August 2006.

ESRC Seminar series

Alex Haslam and Inma Adarves-Yorno have been awarded £15,376 from the ESRC for a seminar series entitled "Balancing the Tensions: Using Organisational Theory to Inform Business Practice". The series of four seminars will take place at Exeter, Lancaster and Aston universities.

Alex Haslam, Tom Postmes, Jolanda Jetten, Cath Haslam, Michelle Ryan and Huw Williams have been awarded a large ESRC grant for research entitled "The individual in the group: Social identity and the dynamics of change". The grant is for four years from 1st January 2007, and the total amount of the award is £1,063,021.
